After years of holding pop-ups here, famed Sri Lankan restaurant Ministry of Crab is finally opening a permanent Singapore location on 3 July 2024.
Set to debut on Dempsey Road, the restaurant will be serving its signature dishes that are cooked with large Sri Lankan Lagoon crabs, some of them weighing up to two kilograms.
Ministry of Crab Singapore will initially open for dinner. Reservations are now available.
The highlight here is a range of crab sizes that start from around 500g and go all the way up to a 2kg “crabzilla.” All crabs are wild-caught and are never frozen. Ministry of Crab will also serve crabs that are not perfect, which means your crustacean may have uneven claws or is missing a claw.
The crabs are prepared in various ways including wok-fried with garlic and chilli, baked, stewed in curry, and served chilled with warm butter. Dishes also feature Japanese ingredients and culinary techniques, a product of chef Dharshan Munidasa’s heritage.
Other dishes will showcase a range of seafood, including giant freshwater prawns, oysters, and clams.
Ministry of Crab was founded in 2011 by Munidasa with Sri Lankan cricketing legends Mahela Jayawardena and Kumar Sangakkara.
The idea came about after Munidasa hosted a TV show that traced the journey of the Sri Lankan Mud Crab from its home to Singapore, and how it turned into the iconic Singapore chilli crab.
The Colombo branch has graced Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants list for nine consecutive years since 2015. It most recently came in at No.77 on Asia’s 50 Best Restaurant 2024 51-100 list.
This is the sixth Ministry of Crab outlet after opening in Bangkok, Shanghai, Chengdu, Maldives, and Mumbai. Previously, the restaurant held a pop-up in Singapore in 2022 and 2018.
Prices for Ministry of Crab Singapore have not been announced.
