Breadtalk Group has debuted Today Kampung Chicken Rice Restaurant at Tiong Bahru with recipes from the famed Sergeant Chicken Rice hawker stall.
Opened on 26 June 2024, the new concept is designed like a traditional coffee shop and also serves dishes from Michelin Bib Gourmand winner, Li Xin Teochew Fishball Noodles.
Other items include zi char dishes, satay, Nanyang breakfast sets, local desserts, and hae bee hiam toast by a Singapore actor.
The star at Today Kampung Chicken Rice Restaurant is the Hainanese kampung chicken made the same way as Sergeant Chicken Rice chain. It calls for large female kampung chicken that are said to be tender, richer in taste, and have a balanced fat-to-meat ratio.
Diners can order the chicken in quarter (S$12), half (S$20), or whole (S$38) portions. Solo patrons can opt for the Premium Duo Style Chicken (S$9.50) featuring both poached and roast meat, and rice steamed with chicken fat, pandan leaves, lemongrass, garlic, and ginger. The dish comes with chicken soup, a chilli sauce made with honey pineapple puree, dark soy sauce, and ginger sauce with chicken fat.
Other chicken dishes include the Signature Kampung Chicken Porridge (S$6.50) and Hainanese curry chicken noodles (S$8).
Another highlight at Today Kampung Chicken Rice Restaurant is Lixin Teochew Fishball Noodles. The brand is known for its fishballs made entirely with yellowtail fish. They most recently retained their Bib Gourmand recognition in the 2024 Michelin Guide Singapore.
Every day throughout July, Lixin is offering S$1 off all noodles from 7.30am to 10.30am.
For zi char dishes, the Salt & Pepper Dragon Tongue Fish (S$18) is fried until the bones are edible. Pui Kia Ribs (from S$16) are coated with a tangy sauce made with sun-dried tomatoes, and the Signature Wok-fried Chicken Rice (S$8) offers a smoky aroma and is topped with pork floss.
Desserts like chendol (S$2.50), cheng tng (S$2.50) and ice kachang (S$2.50) are also available.
For breakfast, Today Kampung Chicken Rice Restaurant has toast with a hae bee hiam spread made by Singapore celebrity Li Nan Xing. According to the actor, he prepares the dried shrimp sambal according to a family recipe.
This is the second time that Breadtalk Group has opened a dining establishment in Tiong Bahru. Last year, it launched Toast Box Coffee House serving kaya toast and hawker food. The outlet also houses a branch of First Street Teochew Fish Soup and sells locally roasted coffee beans.
