The Paris Olympics 2024 got off to a blistering start with a firecracker of an opening ceremony on Friday, 26 July. More than 10,700 athletes from 206 nations are partaking in 32 events and all of them have the same aim — to secure the top spot on the podium.
Making its 18th appearance in the marquee sports meet, Hong Kong boasts a contingent of 36 athletes who are competing in 12 events. This year, we have fielded a strong contingent which promises an impressive haul of medals. Judging by the start the contingent has had, these expectations are not ill-placed.
On Saturday, 27 July, Vivian Kong won the gold medal in the women’s épée event (fencing). Her win opened Hong Kong’s medals tally for this year. It also took our overall count of Olympic medals to double digits.
With her impressive feat, Kong joins an elite group of athletes, which includes Lee Lai Shan and Cheung Ka Long, who have won a gold medal at the Olympics.
A couple of days later, Cheun Ka Long and Siobhán Haughey added to our medals tally with a gold and bronze medal, respectively. This is Cheun Ka Long’s second gold medal.
