Fencer Edgar Cheung Ka-long and swimmer Siobhan Haughey have been named the Hong Kong team flagbearers for the 2024 Paris Olympics opening ceremony.
The last of the Hong Kong Olympic team set off for Paris on Monday to compete in the 2024 Olympics. Brian Stevenson, Chef de Mission of the Hong Kong delegation, made the announcement in the airport as the athletes prepared to depart.
“I am very pleased, because they are our very best medal winners from Tokyo,” Stevenson said. “I hope those athletes carrying our flag is good feng shui.”
This will be Siobhan Haughey‘s first time being one of the flagbearers for the Hong Kong team. Meanwhile, Cheung Ka-long has become the first Hong Kong athlete to take on the role twice. He was also a flagbearer during the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games alongside badminton player Tse Ying-suet.
2024 Paris Olympics opening ceremony
The opening ceremony will take place this week on July 26, 7.30 p.m. Paris time, or July 27, 1.30 a.m. HKT. Traditionally, the ceremony is held inside a stadium. This time, it will be held outdoors along the River Seine. Almost 100 boats will carry thousands of athletes from all over the world down the river. They will sail past some of Paris’ most iconic locations, such as the Notre Dame Cathedral and Pont Neuf. The ceremony culminates in the cauldron lighting, signifying the official opening of the Olympic Games.
More about the Hong Kong flagbearers
The two are among Hong Kong’s most promising athletes to win a medal in the upcoming Olympics. During the Tokyo Olympics, the Hong Kong team won a total of six medals, a first for the city. The 2024 Hong Kong flagbearers won three of those medals.
Cheung Ka-long brought home a historic gold medal in fencing during the previous Tokyo Olympics. On the other hand, Siobhan Haughey won two silver medals in swimming. This achievement made her the most successful Hong Kong athlete in a single edition of the Olympic Games. Hopefully, we’ll see Hong Kong win multiple medals once again in the 2024 Paris Olympics.
