‘Alpha Cop’: Read About The Fake Movie Planned To Shroud ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’

Ryan Reynolds reveals on Hot Ones that the original plan for Deadpool & Wolverine was to be hidden behind a terrible fake movie.

The only MCU film of the year and arguably one of the most anticipated, Deadpool & Wolverine, is finally out in theatres here in Thailand, a good two days before its US release. It’s been a long time coming to see these two mismatched characters share the screen, and it almost seemed like it wasn’t going to happen especially after Hugh Jackman announced his retirement from playing the iconic mutant. But the moment is finally here and we can see the antics and chaos Deadpool and Wolverine finally get up to in the multiverse.

The original plan for the film, however, seemed to have been far more ambitious. On the most recent Hot Ones episode, Ryan Reynolds revealed that Deadpool & Wolverine was supposed to be hidden behind an intentionally terrible fake movie. If they had pulled it off, it would have been one of the most epic film releases of all time.

On Hot Ones, host Sean Evans asked Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds about when a leak is a good thing or a bad thing. For those who remember, the first Deadpool movie was greenlit due to leaked test footage and the positive response it got. This Deadpool film was also not spared from leaks with many photos of its sets circulating online, though Reynolds says that their biggest surprises haven’t even “been hypothesised”.

This caused Reynolds to reveal what the original plan for the release of the movie was. “The original idea with this movie was to shoot a fake movie called Alpha Cop that was intentionally bad,” he explained. If the title already sounds horrible to you, the (fake) plot just makes it worse. “It was about two guys sharing one brain and together they make the ultimate cop.” They even got a poster made which said, “Alpha Cop: Two cops, one brain, all balls”.

“It was meant to be kind of horrible,” he continued. “Ten people in America would go to see this movie on opening weekend, and five minutes into the movie, the Marvel logo would flip up and it would actually be Deadpool & Wolverine.”

It definitely sounds epic and the internet would have been blown away if this was how the film was released. However, Reynolds said it just wasn’t feasible because of the possibility of the whole thing being leaked. “The problem is, if you manage to get right down to the last minute and it gets blown, you know, it would just be heartbreaking.”

“Damn,” Jackman reacted. “That was so cool.”

Meanwhile, Sean Evans, ever the spokesperson for audiences, said what we were all thinking: “It would be unfortunate for the people that really wanted to see Alpha Cop too.”
