Marvel’s latest flick, Deadpool & Wolverine, opened to rave response from fans. Directed by Shawn Levy, the film is the third instalment in the Deadpool series starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman in titular roles. And, fans have already started wondering about Deadpool 4.

Even after becoming a laughingstock of a character after debuting in X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009), Reynolds managed to turn the tides on his character Deadpool in 2016. The standalone venture became one of the biggest hits under the Marvel banner. The Tim Miller directorial also became the fourth highest-grossing R-rated film of all time.

Deadpool has now become one of the most beloved superheroes in Marvel, thanks to his ironic humour, tendency to break the fourth wall and his signature foul-mouthed persona.

The sequel for the foul-mouthed superhero, Deadpool 2 (2018), was a bigger success as it became the third highest-grossing R-rated film of all time, only ranking behind Joker (2019) and Oppenheimer (2023). For the third instalment in the franchise, Reynolds brought out the big guns by reuniting with his beloved arch-nemesis and a blast from the past, Wolverine.

Released on 26 July 2024, Deadpool & Wolverine has been called the best Marvel movie since Avengers: Endgame (2019) by many. With the threequel satisfying the fans, is there any possibility for Deadpool 4?

Is ‘Deadpool 4’ on the cards for Marvel?

In the latest Marvel flick, Deadpool (Reynolds) and Wolverine (Jackman) were seen grudgingly teaming up to save the universe from Omega-level mutant Cassandra Nova (Emma Corrin). She plans to destroy the multiverse by employing the Time Ripper created by the TVA from Loki. While the two superheroes are strong and practically immortal, they would have to make the ultimate sacrifice of atomising one of them.

The plot successfully fools the audience by exploring Logan’s guilt-stricken persona caused by the failure to protect his timeline. On the other hand, Deadpool has always struggled to find his superhero virtue. This led many fans to believe that Wolverine would sacrifice himself. However, the foul-mouthed superhero surprises everyone by atomising himself at the last moment. However, Wolverine would be compelled to jump to overpower Cassandra Nova, thus, killing the duo.

But this is Marvel and they would not lose their two most bankable superheroes in a single film! The duo survives and appears well enough to come back in future MCU films. Now that Deadpool has officially made his entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, fans eagerly want to see him in future MCU films.

However, the studio giant has not officially confirmed Deadpool 4. Although Marvel is known for its excellent fan service, head Kevin Feige, who graced the Deadpool panel at the 2024 San Diego Comic-Con along with Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, remained tight-lipped about the possibility of Deadpool 4.

While a fourth instalment has not been confirmed yet, fans are hopeful for a return as the latest film merges the superhero with the main MCU timeline. The makers will most likely explore Deadpool’s involvement in the MCU and as a member of X-Men. The trope can also help the Merc with a Mouth to explore his conflict of being a reluctant hero.

This also clears the path for introducing other superheroes from the multiverse. The opportunities are endless in the Marvel Cinematic universe.

As for the release date, Marvel is notorious for being unpredictable about its film launches. There are sequels that have been released within a couple of years of the original (Deadpool 2 was released two years after the first film), while there are also instalments that took over a decade to be out in theatres. Hence, it is not easy to predict the release date for Deadpool 4.

Will Ryan Reynolds join the cast of ‘Deadpool 4’?

Talking about the Deadpool 4 cast, Wade Wilson is the most obvious character to return. His survival in Deadpool & Wolverine further solidifies his return in the fourth instalment. But will Ryan Reynolds reprise the role?

While the fans are eagerly hoping for an official announcement for the fourth instalment, Ryan Reynolds hilariously shut down the possibility of playing the loudmouth superhero again. During his appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon to promote Deadpool & Wolverine, the 47-year-old star was asked about the possibility of Deadpool 4.

In true Deadpool fashion, Reynolds stated, “My wife and children will divorce me. Jimmy, I have no prenup with any of them. I will be capital ‘B’ broke, and in turn, probably then doing ‘Deadpool 4‘ because I’d need the money.” He quipped pop star Taylor Swift could replace him as she would make a “good Deadpool”. Was he serious though? Only time will tell.

As for the rest of the cast, Wade’s close-knit family-like-friends Dopinder (played by Karan Soni), Peter (played by Rob Delaney), and Blind A (played by Leslie Uggams) along with his ex-girlfriend (played by Morena Baccarin) also have a chance to return.
