AR Rahman: A musical tour de force embodied

Born in the city of Chennai, Rahman was destined to be musically inclined at birth, given how his father was none other than film composer R.K Sekhar himself, whose oeuvre spanned 52 films. Tragically, Sekhar passed away when Rahman was only 9, leaving the family financially destitute.

In spite of their circumstances, his musical talent prevailed and he went on to train under Tamil Nadu multi-instrumentalist, Master Dhanraj before being admitted into Malayalam composer M.K Arjunan’s orchestra at 11 years old.

With a mastery in a multitude of instruments, including the piano and synthesizer, he became a constant feature within the orchestral scene and played for other prominent composers in India before successfully nabbing a scholarship to study at the Trinity College of Music in London.

As for his own professional career in music, Rahman first started composing music for use in documentaries, television shows, as well as advertisements before landing his first major break with Roja in 1992. Proving both a critical and commercial success, he nabbed the Best Music Director Award at the 40th National Film Awards. This recognition paved the way for a string of other big-budget projects, including the 1995 films Bombay, Rangeela, and Indira.

Global prominence followed with Rahman working on the film score for Nicholas Cage’s 2005 crime drama, Lord of War, and two years later with Cate Blanchette’s Elizabeth, The Golden Age which he co-composed with Craig Armstrong. But it was with Slumdog Millionaire that the composer solidified his repute by making history as the first Asian composer to receive two Academy Awards, in addition to a Golden Globe.

Beyond his work in film, Rahman is also noted for releasing original compositions used in a number of prominent stage productions, such as Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Bombay Dreams, as well as the musical theater adaptation of J.R.R Tolkien’s The Lord of The Rings.
