Rolex and Wimbledon: In Conversation With Rolex Testimonees Carlos Alcaraz and Holger Rune

This summer, a captivating chapter unfolds on the hallowed turf of Wimbledon. Spanish superstar Carlos Alcaraz, a rising star already etched in the annals of tennis, arrives at The Championships, Wimbledon, poised to emulate a legend. It was 20 years ago that a young Roger Federer, a fellow Rolex Testimonee, successfully defended his first Wimbledon title, setting the stage for an unparalleled reign in the sport as the eight-time Wimbledon champion.

“Winning that last point on Centre Court was a crazy moment for me.” – Carlos Alcaraz

For nearly half a century, Rolex has championed the passion, skill and technical precision required to win Wimbledon — the epitome of tennis elegance and tradition. This iconic tournament, a testament to tennis artistry and tradition, finds its perfect partner in the Swiss watchmaker, a relationship that dates back to 1978, when Rolex became Official Timekeeper.

The 137th edition of Wimbledon unfolds on its pristine grass courts from 1 to 14 July this year, beckoning the world’s leading players to vie for the coveted Grand Slam title. All eyes will be on Centre Court as Alcaraz, the reigning champion himself, seeks to emulate Federer. Will this young maestro rise to the occasion, mirroring the brilliance of his illustrious predecessor? The anticipation is palpable.

Ahead of the historic tournament, we speak to Alcaraz and fellow Rolex Testimonee Holger Rune about watches and Wimbledon.

The two of you have been playing tennis together for a long time, and now you’re both Rolex Testimonees. What’s your friendship like?
Holger: I grew up competing in junior tournaments with Carlos Alcaraz and it’s amazing to think we are still playing tennis and representing Rolex together now. Having a friend on tour and one who has known you for such a long time is a great feeling. It’s really cool seeing him achieving at the top of the game and to be playing tennis at the highest level alongside each other. It’s very special to be able to share these moments together.

By becoming Rolex Testimonees, you join the ranks of celebrated names including the legend himself, Roger Federer.
Holger: If I could partner anyone in doubles, it would be Roger Federer. He is my favourite player and I think that playing doubles with him would be great because he plays so well at the net and is an amazing volleyer. Of course, Roger is a legend of the game, so he has a deep understanding of all aspects of tennis, which I think would make life a lot easier and give us a good chance of winning.

Carlos, let’s rewind to last year, when you beat Novak Djokovic in the final. How did you feel on winning championship point in 2023?
Carlos: The moment I won the championship point at Wimbledon, my legs were shaking, my hands were shaking, so it was really difficult to deal with that feeling. In some ways, overcoming my emotions was an even greater challenge than winning the last point against the defending champion. Winning that last point on Centre Court was a crazy moment for me.

Can you tell us about the watch you wore when you lifted the trophy? We hear it’s your favourite.
Carlos: The Rolex Daytona I was wearing when I lifted the Wimbledon trophy last year holds the most sentimental value. I also wore it during the whole two weeks of the tournament, so it has been with me for some very important moments. It holds many memories from my tennis career and it’s also a symbol of my relationship with Rolex, which makes it even more special.

How’s your preparation for this year’s tournament?
Carlos: My preparation for Wimbledon is a bit different from the other Grand Slams because we are not used to playing on grass courts during the rest of the season. It’s just that very short amount of time that we compete on this surface, so we have to adapt quickly and use different skills. I have a specific fitness routine coming into grass court season, because I think moving well on this surface is the most important thing.

As Rolex Testimonees, how are you two feeling going into Wimbledon?
Holger: It feels great seeing the Rolex crown at tournaments when I’m competing. Rolex is a very cool brand and I think it suits tennis very well. Occasionally, when you’re playing a match, the screen on court shows Rolex Testimonees over the years and they include me alongside the other talented players in the Rolex family, which is a great feeling and very motivating. It’s an honour to know that you are playing the sport as part of the Rolex family, and to represent the brand at tournaments around the world.

Carlos: Wimbledon is just special. It’s like playing in a different era and stepping back in time when you walk through the gates. The tournament has its traditions and rules that go back so many years, so when you play there, you really feel like you are following in the footsteps of tennis legends. The excellence and elegance that the tournament brings to tennis is what makes Wimbledon unique and a perfect match for Rolex.
