Every tennis player dreams of becoming a Wimbledon champion at some point in their career. And every year, a select few are viewed as potential winners in their respective categories, thanks to their stats and rankings. Wondering who are those talented athletes this year? Here’s a look at the top seeds of Wimbledon 2024.

But first, let’s start with a brief history of the tournament. Widely regarded as the most prestigious tennis tournament, the Wimbledon was founded in 1877 and is now in its 137th edition. It is one of the four Grand Slam events, besides the Australian Open, the French Open and the US Open.

Held at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club (commonly known as the All England Club) in London, Wimbledon is the only major tennis tournament to be played on an outdoor grass court. It also has a strict all-white dress court for all participants and is the only competition to do so.

Whenever we think of Wimbledon, one name definitely comes to our minds — Roger Federer. The Swiss legend has won a record eight titles at the All England Club. Serbian modern-day great Novak Djokovic trails Federer by a solitary title.

Djokovic is competing in the prestigious tournament this year and has a good chance of equalling the record. However, he will have his task cut out with stiff competition from the likes of Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz, among others.

So, on that note, join us as we take a close look at all the top seeds of Wimbledon 2024 in both the men’s and women’s divisions, and who among them are likely to win the crown. But before we discuss in depth about the Wimbledon 2024 seedings, we need to answer the following question:

How does the seeding system work for Wimbledon?

Seeds at Wimbledon are basically the top players of the tournament in all the singles and doubles categories. The seeding system at this major tournament, which was introduced in 1924, has been through a number of phases.

According to the earliest method of seeding, the countries could nominate up to four players who were drawn in different quarters. This system was revamped in 1927. From then on, players were seeded based on merit and not their nationality. The first players to be seeded at the top spots were René Lacoste (men’s singles) and Helen Wills (women’s singles).

Between 2002 and 2019, the seeding system at Wimbledon made use of a surface-based formula. The formula calculated the players’ grass-court achievements in the two immediate years before the Grand Slam each year.

Since 2021, the seeds at Wimbledon for both the men’s and women’s singles divisions have been decided based on the ATP and WTA rankings.

A total of 128 players partake in each of the men’s and women’s singles categories. However, like every year, in each category there are only 32 seeds at Wimbledon 2024.

For the first time in his career, Italian player Jannik Sinner will enter a Grand Slam tournament as the top-seeded player. The world number one, who won the Australian Open earlier this year, will be aiming to add a second major title to his name at the All England Club in July 2024.

Seven-time champion and winner of 24 Grand Slam titles, Novak Djokovic, is the second seed at Wimbledon this year. Albeit not enjoying the best of forms in recent times, the Serbian is one of the favourites to win the title.

Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz will be hoping to retain his crown. He has already won the French Open earlier in 2024, and the Spaniard is riding high on confidence as the third seed takes on the best players in the world.

Even though she has five Grand Slam trophies in her cabinet, top-seeded women’s singles player Iga Świątek is yet to reach the semi-finals at Wimbledon. The Polish youngster, aged 23, will be hoping for a change of fortunes this year and win the coveted title that has eluded her in the past.

However, the current world number one and French Open 2024 winner will be challenged for the crown by a host of top players. Leading the pack among her challengers is the 2023 US Open winner Coco Gauff. The American, known for her illustrious portfolio across both the singles and the doubles categories, has also found it difficult in Wimbledon over the years — her best performances at the All England Club are fourth-round finishes in 2019 and 2021.

Markéta Vondroušová, the Czech player, surprised the tennis fraternity by winning the women’s singles title at Wimbledon 2023. The defending champion, who enters this year’s event as the sixth seed, will have to punch way above her weight if she is serious about retaining her title.

Here are the top 10 seeds in the Wimbledon 2024 women’s singles category:

  1. Iga Świątek
