Travel between Hong Kong and Macau just got easier with a new QR code that residents can use when clearing immigration. The new measure, the Mutual Use of QR Code Between HKSAR and Macau SAR Clearance Service, is launched in collaboration with Macau authorities.

Eligible Hong Kong and Macau residents can avail of the service by generating the code using specific mobile applications. Keep reading to find out more details.

Hong Kong and Macau travel: New QR code service for residents

To activate the service, simply generate an encrypted QR code using the Contactless e-Channel mobile application. The QR code will grant travellers automated immigration clearance in Macau.

The QR code only applies to Hong Kong residents aged 11 or above. They must also hold a valid Hong Kong permanent identity card or Hong Kong identity card containing a ‘*’ or ‘R’ symbol. In addition, they must successfully register for the Automated Immigration Clearance Service in Macau.

Macau residents can generate the QR code using the Macao One Account mobile application. There are over 2.5 million eligible Hong Kong residents who have registered for the automated immigration service in Macau since 2009 according to Director of Immigration Benson Kwok Joon-fung. Over three million travellers have used it in the first half of 2024.

Take advantage of the free bus and ferry tickets to Macau

It’s become a monthly weekend affair for Hongkongers to travel to Macau. And for tourists, Macau is usually a one-day trip when visiting HK. With ferry and bus options available, it has become easier to access both cities. So, take advantage of the free transportation services courtesy of the Macau government.
