After a star-studded release schedule dominated by Samsung’s AI-powered foldable phones last month, August 2024 is expected to see a lot of activity in the premium midrange space.
A quick look into our lists of upcoming phones released in 2024 so far reveals that most manufacturers are betting on the competitive budget and midrange segment where buyers are willing to spend more to obtain nicer experiences. Be it Nothing’s mysterious Phone (2a) Plus or Motorola’s next budget-centric instalment in the Edge 50 series, the smartphone market is going to witness the arrival of exciting options at the affordable end of the market.
However, Google is a shock entrant to this list as the California-based technology giant chooses to release its next-gen flagships early. The Pixel 9 series is all set to take on Samsung’s Galaxy S24 series and Apple’s upcoming iPhone 16 series with an expanded lineup of premium devices across all price points. Other than looking good (thanks to the official teasers), these phones are expected to further the cause of generative AI in the mainstream smartphone space.
Some new and exciting options are also expected from iQOO and Vivo later in the month.
While the class of 2024 already has a pretty impressive collection of feature-rich phones on the shelves, all these upcoming phones slated for an August release will further spoil us for choices. Without further ado, let’s explore all the devices coming in 2024.

Hold on, don’t come after us with pitchforks! We agree that it is technically releasing on the last day of July but the Nothing Phone (2a) Plus will ideally be on the shelves in August. Hence, we can count the Nothing Phone (2a) Plus among upcoming phones releasing in August 2024.
But what is the Phone (2a) Plus? Based on the official teasers, it seems that the Phone (2a) Plus will be a more performance-centric variant of the Phone (2a). Featuring a powerful chipset, which we assume to be a MediaTek Dimensity 8300 chip, the Phone (2a) Plus could offer a lot more performance for mobile gaming and new generative AI features. Nothing is also expected to alter the design with a new colour, material and finish.
The Phone (2a) Plus, in essence, could be a filler for Nothing’s midrange presence until the Phone (3) drops next year as a proper Android flagship.

The Google Pixel lineup of 2024 is coming early to counter the threat from Apple’s iPhone 16. This time though, there will be more than just two phones – Google is tackling the competition with four handsets in 2024.
There will be a regular Pixel 9 with a compact 6.1-inch display, the Tensor G4 chip and two rear cameras acting as the most accessible model. The Pixel 9 Pro will also feature a 6.1-inch compact display and the Tensor G4 chip but a versatile setup of three camera sensors at the back. The Pixel 9 Pro XL will essentially offer the same perks as the Pixel 9 Pro with the added benefit of a larger display and a bigger battery capacity.
Lastly, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold brings foldable technology to the mainstream series. This one gets a main foldable display, a compact cover display, a set of triple rear cameras and Google’s advanced Gen-Ai powered by the Tensor G4 chip.
Exciting times are ahead for Pixel fans!

The Edge 50 Neo is expected to succeed the popular Edge 40 Neo from the previous generation and Motorola is giving it ample upgrades to further its superiority over its competition.
Although the Edge 50 Neo is ditching the sought-after curved edge display, Motorola is still giving it a 6.4-inch pOLED flat display with a maximum refresh rate of 120Hz. The Dimensity 7300 chipset, which also powers the Nothing Phone (2a), will be undertaking the performance duties on this one. A 4,310mAh battery will keep the lights on and a versatile triple rear camera system featuring a telephoto shooter could make this a complete all-rounder in this category.
Most importantly, the Edge 50 Neo’s styling, as seen in the leaked renders, makes it one of the most desirable phones in its category.

The iQOO Z9s is coming in August as a performance-centric midrange phone that could outgun the likes of iQOO’s own Neo 9 Pro and the OnePlus 12R. Expected to be a rebadged version of the iQOO Z9 Turbo from the Chinese market, the iQOO Z9s is likely to feature the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 chip. On paper, this watered-down version of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 offers the same kind of performance as Snapdragon 8 Gen 2-powered phones.
Potential buyers can also expect a 1.5K OLED display with a maximum refresh rate of 144Hz and a 6,000mAh battery – two factors that could make this smartphone an absolute hit in its category. All that remains to be seen is what kind of price tag iQOO manages to give it for various regions.

Wondering who or what HMD is? They are the ones responsible for making the recent Nokia feature phones and smartphones. The brand is now planning to release phones under its own name and the first ones will be called the HMD Crest and HMD Crest Max.
Although we have no information about these handsets yet, these upcoming phones from HMD are likely to cater to the budget segment with entry-level chipsets, colourful designs and a focus on qualitative photography experience. Continuing on the legacy of Nokia, the HMD phones could champion the cause of great battery life and easy repairability.
Budget smartphone shoppers, keep an eye out for this one.

We expected the Vivo V40 series to make its debut in Southeast Asian markets in July but Vivo chose to stay silent. Hence, rumours now pinpoint their hope on an August release date for Vivo’s highly anticipated midrange lineup.
The Vivo V40 is based on the Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 chipset, which promises strong midrange performance. Cameras are the highlight of the V series phones and the Vivo V40 makes big promises on that front. Two 50-megapixel sensors, one each for the main and ultrawide lenses provided by Zeiss, take care of generic imaging whereas the front camera also uses a 50-megapixel sensor for detailed selfies and video calls. The design screams glamorous, which is usually unseen in this category.
