We are well and truly into the second half of the year and looking back, it has been a superb one for gamers so far, particularly those who love and appreciate games made by independent developers. Speaking of which, the list of upcoming video games releasing in August 2024 will also please such indie game-loving souls.

The video games released in July had a nice mix of blockbusters like EA Sports College Football 25 as well as those from smaller studios such as The First Descendant. Nintendo Switch owners finally got the much-awaited aerial combat simulator Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown, while The Star Named EOS impressed us with its gorgeous visuals.

August promises to be a feast for Star Wars fans

This month will be a blessing for fans of the Star Wars franchise. On the very first day itself, gamers will be treated to a full remaster of the iconic 2002 action-adventure video game Star Wars: Bounty Hunter. And near the end of the month, on 30 August, Star Wars Outlaws, the first-ever open-world game set in the galaxy far, far away, will be unleashed upon the world.

But the biggest game this month has to be Black Myth: Wukong, an action role-playing game whose gameplay videos we have been drooling over since 2020. And after years of waiting, it is almost here.

Ever wanted to be a cat pirate? This game, which calls itself the “cutest action RPG”, allows one to be a privateer… er, I meant purrivateer, in the Purribean, which is swarming with Pi-rats hunting for the treasure called Northern Star. Also, uncover other meow-stories (the marketing for the game has clearly overdone the cat puns). While it sounds like a casual game, the gameplay videos show plenty of fast-paced action to be had. What’s more, you can invite your friend to play in the co-op mode.

As the name implies, this game is all about preserving the environment. You have to design and nurture biomes where, like natural ecosystems, each component exists in a sort of harmony. There is a nice variety of plants and animals and landscapes like the savannahs, alpine forests and coastal reefs. The game also features a photo mode, using which you can share your pretty creations with others. Because of its modest system requirements, it would also not tax your system.

In The Crush House, you are Jae, the producer of a reality TV show in 1999 called, well, The Crush House. Your job is to cast and produce each season. You also have to film all the romances and the resulting drama that unfolds in a Malibu mansion. Your job does not stop after a season has ended; in fact, it begins anew as you look for a new cast. All the while, you have to fulfil the demands of your audience, or else the show will be cancelled. It looks like an interesting concept and amusingly enough, the game calls itself a “thirst-person shooter”, a play on the genre.

Easily the most exciting video game release this month (if not the year), it comes from Chinese developer Game Science. Based on the 16th-century Chinese novel Journey to the West, this game has you playing as the Destined One. The gameworld is absolutely breathtaking and would not look out of place in an AAA release by a major global publisher. The story is deeply rooted in Chinese myths and legends, and the gameplay looks responsive and fun. While many claim the game belongs to the soulslike genre, the developers do not agree.

Price: INR 2,510.14 (Xbox), INR 2497 (PlayStation)

PC minimum system requirements:

Requires a 64-bit processor and operating system

Graphics: 4 GB, GeForce GTX 970/Radeon RX 480
DirectX: Version 11
Storage: 20 GB available space

An action-adventure game with a pretty art style, Dustborn is set in an alternate-history United States. You play Pax who has been hired to transport a package from Pacifica to Nova Scotia, and you also have a crew of interesting weirdos. The gameplay is tense and engaging, but you can often get out of scraps using just words — which is where Pax’s affinity with language comes in handy.

Platforms: PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S

Price: INR 6,354.25 (Standard Edition), INR 11,799.22 (Ultimate Edition)

PC minimum system requirements: NA

This third-person action-adventure game is set between the events of the second and third Star Wars movies in the original trilogy, The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Return of the Jedi (1983). It follows a character called Kay Vess, a Han Solo-like scoundrel character who has to assemble a team to pull off a heist to get a crime syndicate off her shoulders. Being an AAA title from Ubisoft (both developer and publisher), the production quality is stratospheric.

The minutest thing about the game — be it visuals, features or gameplay mechanics — is impressive and a dream come true for anybody who wants to be a virtual Han Solo. We just hope the game is as impressive as in the promos, as Ubisoft has sometimes over-promised and under-delivered.
