There’s a new GPT model in town and at first glance, it looks like OpenAI is coming for Google’s Gemini and Meta AI chatbots. Called GPT-4o, where the ‘o’ stands for Omni, it is meant to be an all-in-one multimodal AI model rivalling Google’s Gemini Pro.
Unlike the previous AI model releases where OpenAI reserved the latest and greatest for only those who paid a monthly fee, GPT-4o is available to both paid and free-tier users.
Before ChatGPT Plus subscribers start crying foul, you will be glad to know that OpenAI is only allowing limited access to free tier users and it is the paid subscribers who will have unparalleled access to all of its capabilities. For free members, it’s more like a demo that encourages you to pay to unlock its full potential.
Currently, OpenAI is putting free users to the old GPT-3.5 model by default and users need to decide whether they seek the advanced capabilities of the new GPT-4o model. Switching to GPT-4o is a manual process and if you want to taste OpenAI’s latest advancements in the field of generative AI models, this is what you need to do.
How to use GPT-4o on the web, Android and iOS devices
OpenAI is offering GPT-4o as an optional AI model in addition to the older and more familiar GPT-3.5 model. ChatGPT Plus subscribers get the third option of choosing GPT-4, which has been considered OpenAI’s best AI model up until GPT-4o arrived.
1. First, log in to your OpenAI account and go to the chatbot’s homepage. Users on the mobile app also need to log in with their OpenAI account, unless they stay logged in.
2. On the web version, look for a tab-styled button that says ‘GPT-3.5’. This shows that your chatbot window is still relying on the older model. Click on it and you will be greeted with a list of all the available OpenAI models. The process is similar for users of the mobile app on iOS and Android.
3. Now scroll down to GPT-4o and click on it. Your ChatGPT session will now switch to the newer GPT-4o model.
4. OpenAI clarifies that GPT-3.5 is still the fastest when it comes to responding to queries. Hence, if you feel that the newer GPT-4o is too lethargic to respond, you can always follow the same process and switch back to the older GPT-3.5 model. ChatGPT Plus subscribers can also switch to GPT-4 depending on their requirements.
5. Free-tier users may not see the option to switch between the AI models from the homepage dropdown menu initially. But there’s a possibility that OpenAI may have upgraded you to the free version of GPT-4o and the easiest way to find out is by checking for a file attachment icon in the text box. GPT-4o brings multimodal capabilities, which means you can directly upload images, files and videos for the AI model to analyse.
6. However, free-tier users can choose between GPT-3.5 and GPT-4o midway through a conversation. All you need to do is click on the sparkle icon next to the response and bring up the contextual menu that lists all the models available. The process is similar for users on the Android and iOS apps.
