Besides being good for the environment, electric cars can also be fast and fun. And our list of the fastest electric cars in the world is proof.

As green as their intentions may be, electric cars have the potential to up the game in performance and leap into the future. Take the Porsche Taycan for example. Porsche designed it from scratch to be fast and fun to drive, not offer a sleepy-looking mileage machine. The Taycan, as a result, is faster than some of the brand’s iconic 911 sports coupes around a race track.

Rimac, the company that now owns Bugatti, has been on top of this from day one and developed unique technologies to ensure that its Nevera sports car can easily do speeds above 400 kph. 400 kph! That’s faster than the bullet trains plying in Japan. Manufacturers like Lotus and Tesla rely on the electric infrastructure to make their cars even better than their predecessors.

The battery technology still needs to evolve at a rapid pace to make performance vehicles faster but at this moment in time, the auto industry has some fantastic examples of electric cars with electrifying performance to deliver.

Hence, after taking a look at the world’s fastest cars, we have decided to curate a list of the fastest electrics in the world that money can buy.

Fastest electric cars to ever hit the road

Rimac Nevera

Top Speed: 256 mph (412 kph)

Price: USD 2.5 million (SGD 3.4 million)

The Rimac Nevera is to the electric vehicle market what the 2005 Bugatti Veyron was for sports cars in the mid-2000s. What a coincidence!

For those who didn’t get the reference, Rimac is now the new owner of Bugatti. The company is now called Bugatti Rimac.

The Nevera, however, came before the Bugatti deal. Utilising Rimac’s in-house technologies, it broke the top speed record for electric cars and was close to dominating the sportscar category, too. In an instrumented test, the Nevera was clocked at 412 kph – faster than the 2005 Bugatti Veyron. As if that wasn’t enough, the test drive drove the car in reverse and clocked a top speed of 275.74 kph, thereby establishing another benchmark! This is insane, even for a vehicle featuring four electric motors generating 1,187 hp.

The Nevera may not make it to bedroom wall posters courtesy of its generic looks but it doesn’t matter – it has registered itself in the automotive history with its electrifying performance.

Pininfarina Battista

Top Speed: 222 mph (358.03 kph)

Price: USD 2.2 million (SGD 2.9 million)

If you seek an exhilarating performance from your electric car but also some Italian lineage and beauty, the Pininfarina Battista is your best bet. Designed by Italian coachbuilder Pininfarina, this supercar commands unwavering attention on the road. With a powertrain borrowed from Rimac, it has enough performance to back the gorgeous Italian exterior.

The Battista achieved its top speed at the Natrax auto test facility in India, reaching 358.03 kph. While that’s not as fast as the Rimac (despite using the same hardware), the Battista is still blistering fast for an electric car. When not in its V-max mode, the Pininfarina can rely on its 120 kWh battery pack to deliver up to 476 km on a full charge. But you aren’t getting the Battista for its electric range, are you?

Lotus Evija

Top Speed: 218 mph (350 kph)

Price: USD 2.3 million (SGD 3.1 million)

The Lotus Evija has brought us to our knees with its radically beautiful design. Just look at those Venturi tunnels highlighted by the LED taillamps and the pretty front fascia with suave character lines!

But the Evija is more than just a pretty face – that breathtaking design aids the aerodynamics of the car, helping to generate ample downforce and keep it pinned to the tarmac. Its mid-mounted battery pack along with the powerful electric motors generates 1,972 hp, which is enough to propel this British beauty to 350 kph. Sounds slow? That’s because Lotus has electronically limited the top speed for safety. We wonder what a totally unbridled Evija could do to our sheet of the fastest electric cars in the world.

Lucid Air Sapphire

Top Speed: 205 mph (330 kph)

Price: USD 249,000 (approximately SGD 338,379)

The Lucid Air Sapphire is the fastest electric sedan that money can buy. Despite the Tesla Model S Plaid beating performance credentials, the Lucid Air Sapphire still manages to ferry its passengers in utmost luxury and comfort. Lucid’s official figures suggest that the Air Sapphire can reach a top speed of 330 kph, thereby pushing it into the supercar territory. The tri-motor setup with 1,234 hp at the wheels also makes possible an electrifying acceleration figure of 0-100 kph in 1.89 seconds.

Hence, if you are someone who prefers to win drag races while wearing your Armani suit and with the seats massaging, the Lucid Air Sapphire might be just what the doctor ordered.

Tesla Model S Plaid

Top Speed: 200 mph (322 kph)

Price: USD 81,490 (approximately SGD 110,741)

What business does an executive saloon have in the list of the world’s fastest electric cars? Tesla feels that body shape is just a preference and isn’t going to hamper performance.

The Model S Plaid is one of the fastest EVs on this list that you and any average Joe can buy off the shelves, unlike the limited-run supercars preceding it. With a top speed of 322 kph, this Model S is almost as fast as some petrol-powered supercars, if not faster. The All-Wheel Drive system can accelerate this sedan from 0-100 kph in under 2 seconds.

Obviously, you end up compromising on some of the famed Tesla range but hey! We aren’t complaining.

Porsche Taycan Turbo GT with Weissach Package

Top Speed: 305 kph

Price: USD 230,000 (approximately SGD 311,935)

The Porsche Taycan Turbo GT with Weissach Package may not be the fastest Porsche around but in the world of electric vehicles, it sure does pack a punch – lots of it, if we are honest. With racing components strapped onto the already fast Taycan Turbo GT, this track-ready iteration of the Taycan accelerates from 0-100 kph in 2.2 seconds and flat out, it will reach a top speed of 305 kph. Not so fast on the straight as the Model S Plaid but Porsche’s fine-tuning of the chassis makes it a car suites for track driving.

Despite the racing gear onboard, the Taycan Turbo GT Weissach Package offers all the bells and whistles you expect from a premium sedan, including dual-zone climate control and advanced connected car features. You don’t get massage seats though but we don’t think anyone needs that while doing over 250 kph around a corner.

Tesla Model 3 Performance

Top Speed: 261 kph

Price: SGD 89,800

How much performance can you extract out of the Tesla Model 3? Apparently, a lot, if you look at the Tesla Model 3 Performance. With the revised bodywork and upgraded mechanical bits (mostly electronics though), the Model 3 Performance can sprint from 0-100 kph in 3.1 seconds and max out at a top speed of 261 kph. That’s more than enough for a car Elon Musk designed for grocery runs and office commutes!

However, this isn’t your average comfort-oriented Model 3. The Performance variant adds sport seats, adaptive suspension, 20-inch wheels and a Track Mode to help you extract the best out of this compact sedan.

Audi RS e-tron GT

Top Speed: 250 kph

Price: SGD 824,675

Audi’s flagship electric sedan makes it to this list as one of the fastest electric cars you can buy. At 250 kph, which is electronically limited by Audi, the e-tron GT is fast enough to be on par with most executive sedans from BMW and Mercedes. With its brisk acceleration figure of 0-100 kph in 3.3 seconds, drivers will have a lot of fun between a set of traffic lights during their commute. Once the urge to race ends, a fully-charged battery pack promises to deliver 401 km of range.

And since it is an Audi, you can count on it to make you comfortable with sporty seats and a host of advanced electronic gizmos.

Tesla Model Y Performance

Top Speed: 250 kph

Price: SGD 92,690

Who says that a heavy electric crossover SUV with its suspension tuned for comfort can’t be as fast as sports cars? The Model Y Performance from Tesla proves that size is no longer a restrictive factor in going fast. With a top speed of 250 kph and a 0-100 kph acceleration time of 3.7 seconds, the Model Y Performance doesn’t seem out of place on a racetrack, even when the cargo space is full of your weekly grocery and golf bags.

Keep in mind that it is still an SUV and hence, the Model Y Performance will be largely happy in drag races. On a racetrack with corners, it would need skills to tame this beast and post respectable lap times.

Mercedes AMG EQS 53

Top Speed: 250 kph

Price: SGD 895,888

Last but not least, we have Mercedes’ flagship electric sedan – the AMG EQS 53 4Matic+. With its highly aerodynamic body and dual-motor powertrain, this AMG electric sedan can sprint from 0-100 kph in 3.4 seconds and flat out, it will do a top speed of 250 kph. Keep in mind that Mercedes has electronically limited the speed to 250 kph, which means there is a possibility of this sedan going faster.

The Mercedes AMG EQS 53 is the second car in this list after the Lucid Air Sapphire to lay equal emphasis on comfort and luxury. Featuring a dashboard that’s full of large touchscreen infotainment displays, massaging seats, ambient lighting and a high-end audio system, this is a car that will keep the entire family happy.
