The Gears of War series has long captivated players with its intense gameplay and deep narrative. Now, the spotlight is on its latest instalment, Gears of War: E-Day.

The announcement of the game, which was made at the recent Xbox Games Showcase on 9 June 2024, was a landmark moment, heralding a return to the franchise’s origins and paving the way for a fresh narrative arc. With this upcoming release, the series is set to explore the franchise’s roots.

Gears of War: E-Day has already sparked considerable excitement among fans, particularly those keen to revisit this pivotal chapter in the franchise’s history. The Coalition is developing Gears of War: E-Day Xbox and PC versions, which will be a day 1 release for Xbox Game Pass users.

The creators are using Unreal Engine 5 to develop this new Gears of War title, and the in-engine footage looks incredible. For every fan excited about this title, we bring you every detail we could gather on Gears of War: E-Day

‘Gears of War: E-Day’ release date, gameplay features and more

This series started with the release of Gears of War, an Xbox 360-exclusive third-person shooter game launched back in 2006. That cover-to-cover shooter featured a bunch of hulky men fighting a dangerous alien threat. It was an instant success and gave birth to a franchise that has yet to see a flop.

Before Gears of War: E-Day, the series saw a significant evolution with the release of Gears 5. This title proved to be a turning point, introducing larger and more open environments, a deeper focus on character-driven narratives and enhanced player choice that made a significant impact on the storyline. It even shifted the linear progression system of previous games towards a more open-world format, allowing players to explore and interact with the game’s alien setting.

It remains to be seen if Gears of War: E-Day gameplay will have any similarities to Gears 5, or if it will be more like the original games in the series, giving players a straightforward cinematic, linear experience.

The trailer for the game gave it a much darker tone than its predecessors, and it looks like this title will mainly feature Marcus and Dom experiencing the events of E-Day together as a two-man squad.

While the trailer featured in-engine visuals (which means its development has progressed far enough), the Gears of War: E-Day release date has not been announced. Maybe Microsoft will announce that at a later date. Whenever this announcement comes, we will be waiting.

Where does ‘E-Day’ fit in the ‘Gears of War’ timeline?

The new title will be a prequel aiming to delve into a critical event from the franchise known as Emergence Day. This was the moment when the fearsome Locust Horde first erupted from beneath the planet Sera’s surface.

Set 14 years before the events of the original title, this game will follow younger versions of the series’ original heroes, Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago.

What does this mean for the ‘Gears of War’ collection?

No doubt Microsoft surprised its fans with this unexpected announcement, but the absence of a much-anticipated Gears of War collection disappointed many people. For a long time, rumours of The Coalition developing a collection of original Gears of War games for modern platforms have been floating online, yet it was excluded from this showcase.

Maybe Microsoft wanted to keep E-Day in the spotlight, so we might see that collection announced later, maybe during a later showcase, or The Game Awards 2024?
